'I'm Not A Chef' is inspired by a special moment cooking sausage rolls in the kitchen with my nephew. He was stood in his box that brings him up to countertop height and carefully brushing each pastry bite with egg wash.
I remarked on his diligence as a chef which followed with a very stern declaration... 'I'm not a chef!' which made us laugh, and when we soon realised he wasn't sure what chef meant, that made it even funnier. The moment lives through me so vividly even today! I painted from sketches and memory to capture the vibrancy of how it felt in the moment, watching this young determined mind help in the kitchen and learn a new skill.
That is why the background is a beautiful bright yellow, it feels alive and brings so much colour into the kitchen it now hangs in.
When painting I deliberately left areas unfinished here to create a sense of creation from my nephew's own perspective. As the painter I cannot finish what he is in the midst of creating himself. I want it to feel in process, as if he creates every day in the space the piece is displayed. It creates such a feeling of curiosity and childlike wonder.
