'Land of Longing and Belonging' is a landscape piece I painted to capture the incredible jewel colours of the Welsh Snowdonian hills.
Whilst painting I used expressive large brushstrokes to play with scale. I also explored my love of calligraphy with the singular lines I created with an angled brush, as if writing my own heritage into the painting whilst working from memory and reference photos from recent travels.
In some areas of the canvas you can spot the underpainting lines I used to map out the space, I've left these visible as I hoped to capture the idea of mapping such a vast landscape, one that has witnessed so many of my ancestors, and will hold my future lineage too, outlasting us all. The hills know more than I will as a human and the spaces allow the piece to breathe as the landscape continuously expands, grows, and changes.
A dramatic piece perfect for a dramatic living space, or dining room. Narrow in height but beautiful length it sits across a wall perfectly.
